FAQ
Short answers to the questions customers ask most often.
Is MileLedger free?
Yes — MileLedger is free to download and the core mileage tracking features are free with no time limit. Drive recording, categorization, and sync are all unlimited on the free tier. The only hard limit on the free tier is 10 expense records. Premium is a paid subscription that removes the expense cap and unlocks PDF and advanced exports.
Does MileLedger give tax advice?
No. MileLedger is a record-keeping and tracking app, not a tax preparation service. The dollar estimates shown in reports are simple arithmetic (miles × rate) — they are not IRS determinations, legal opinions, or tax advice. Always consult a qualified tax professional before filing.
Does every drive get recorded automatically?
Not necessarily. MileLedger's automatic tracking can detect and record most drives, but it depends on iOS location permissions, whether the app is actively running (or allowed to run in the background), and a minimum distance threshold. Very short trips below about 0.5 miles are filtered out by default. You can always log a drive manually.
Can I use MileLedger on the web?
Yes — MileLedger has a web app at mileledger.com. Sign in with your Google account to view your synced drives and expenses, see a summary report, and download a CSV export. However, drive recording (automatic or manual) is only available on the phone app. The web is primarily a reporting and export surface.
How does sync work?
When you are signed in with your Google account, MileLedger syncs your drives, expenses, vehicles, and settings to Firebase automatically. Sync is free for all signed-in users and requires no configuration. Your data appears on the web and on any other phone where you sign in with the same Google account.
What counts as a business drive?
In MileLedger, a business drive is any drive you manually categorize as Business — either by tapping the categorization button or letting an automation rule set it. The app does not apply IRS rules or judge whether a drive qualifies as deductible. That determination is your responsibility and your tax professional's.
What’s the difference between Saved Places and Smart Routes?
Saved Places are pins for places like home or office. Smart Routes are routes you take often, like a commute. If both could apply, Smart Routes win, then Saved Places, then Work Hours.
Is my data private?
MileLedger is local-first: your drives, expenses, and settings live on your device by default and are not sent anywhere unless you sign in. When signed in, data syncs to Firebase (your own Firebase-backed account). MileLedger does not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for any purpose other than providing the service.
How accurate is mileage tracking?
MileLedger uses the phone's built-in GPS to record drives. Accuracy is generally good in open areas but can be affected by GPS signal quality, tunnels, urban canyons, and other interference. Drives flagged with a low-GPS-accuracy quality indicator may need manual review.
Can I export my data?
Yes. You can export a JSON backup of core local records (free), an Accountant CSV (drives and expenses, free), or a full report export (CSV or PDF, some formats Premium). The JSON file is not a full dump of every app setting and attachment — see Backup and restore for details.
What happens if I cancel Premium?
Cancelling Premium does not delete any of your data. At the end of your current billing period, you return to the free tier. Your existing drives and expenses are still there — you just cannot add more than 10 expenses until you re-subscribe.
