Does every drive get recorded automatically?

Not necessarily. MileLedger's automatic tracking can detect and record most drives, but it depends on iOS location permissions, whether the app is actively running (or allowed to run in the background), and a minimum distance threshold. Very short trips below about 0.5 miles are filtered out by default. You can always log a drive manually.

Requirements for automatic tracking

Location permission set to Always (not just When In Use) — this allows MileLedger to detect motion without the app being open.

Automatic Tracking enabled in Settings.

The app not force-quit by the user — if you force-quit MileLedger, iOS may suspend its background activity.

Minimum trip length

Drives shorter than approximately 0.5 miles (800 metres) are filtered out by default to avoid recording parking-lot movements and very short errands. This threshold is configurable in Settings → Tracking → Minimum Drive Distance.

When drives may be missed

If the app was force-quit before the drive.

If iOS restricted background activity due to low battery or Low Power Mode.

If location permission was set to While Using App instead of Always.

If the drive was shorter than the minimum distance threshold.

Manual logging as a fallback

Any missed drive can be added manually from the Drives tab using Add Drive. Enter the date, start/end location, distance, and categorization. Manual drives are treated identically to automatically recorded ones in reports.

Important notes

  • For the most reliable automatic tracking, grant Always location permission and avoid force-quitting the app.
  • MileLedger does not track your location when automatic tracking is disabled or when no drive is in progress.
