What information is extracted from a receipt

MileLedger uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to read receipts. It extracts the merchant name and the total amount only. All other fields — line items, tax, tip, subtotal, category — must be entered manually.

What is extracted automatically

Merchant name — the business or store name as it appears on the receipt.

Total amount — the final amount charged, typically the largest prominently displayed figure on the receipt.

What is NOT extracted

Line items — individual purchased products or services are not extracted.

Tax — sales tax or VAT subtotals are not extracted automatically.

Tip — gratuity is not extracted automatically.

Subtotal — the pre-tax amount is not extracted.

Discount — coupon or promotional discount amounts are not extracted.

Date and time — the transaction date on the receipt is not used to auto-fill the expense date.

Payment method or card number — not extracted.

Why only merchant and total?

Receipt layouts vary enormously across businesses, countries, and point-of-sale systems. Reliably identifying tax, tip, and line-item rows in arbitrary receipt layouts is outside the scope of MileLedger's current on-device OCR.

Extracting only the two most consistently structured fields (merchant header and final total) keeps the scanning experience fast, private, and reliable.

Entering the remaining fields

After scanning, review the pre-filled Merchant and Amount fields, then manually enter tax, tip, subtotal, discount, fees, and line items as needed.

Refer to your physical receipt or the expense editor's breakdown fields for guidance.
