How to scan a receipt

MileLedger's document scanner uses your phone camera and on-device Vision OCR to capture a receipt. It extracts the merchant name and total amount automatically. Always review the results before saving.

Steps

  1. 1

    Open the expense editor

Tap "+" to create a new expense, or open an existing expense and tap Edit.

  2. 2

Tap Add Attachment → Scan Document

In the Attachments section, tap "Add Attachment" then choose "Scan Document" to launch the document camera.

  3. 3

    Position the receipt

Hold your phone directly over the receipt on a flat, well-lit surface. The camera will detect the edges automatically and highlight the receipt in yellow.

  4. 4

    Capture the scan

Tap the shutter button, or allow the auto-capture to trigger when the receipt edges are clearly detected.

  5. 5

    Scan additional pages if needed

For multi-page receipts, continue scanning each page. Tap Keep Scan after each page, then tap Save when all pages are captured.

  6. 6

    Review extracted data

MileLedger's on-device Vision OCR extracts the merchant name and total amount. These pre-fill the Merchant and Amount fields. Review both values carefully.

  7. 7

    Correct any errors

If the OCR result is incorrect, tap the relevant field and type the correct value before saving.

  8. 8

    Save the expense

Tap Save. The scanned image is stored as an attachment and the extracted data is applied to the expense.

Expected results

  • The receipt image is attached to the expense.
  • The Merchant and Amount fields are pre-filled with OCR-extracted values (subject to image quality).
  • You can zoom into the attachment at any time to verify the original receipt.

Important notes

  • OCR extraction is performed entirely on-device using Apple's Vision framework. No receipt image or content is sent to external servers during scanning.
  • Only merchant name and total amount are extracted automatically. Line items, individual taxes, and tip amounts are not extracted by OCR.
  • Always verify extracted values against the physical receipt before saving.
