Tips for improving scan accuracy

The quality of OCR extraction depends heavily on the quality of the input image. Follow these tips to get the most accurate merchant name and amount readings.

Lighting

Scan in a well-lit environment. Natural daylight or a bright indoor lamp works best.

Avoid scanning directly under overhead fluorescent lights that cast shadows across the text.

If your receipt is on glossy thermal paper, angle the phone slightly to eliminate glare.

Do not use your phone flash when scanning close up — it often creates a bright hotspot that washes out text.

Camera positioning

Hold the phone directly above the receipt (not at an angle) so the text is as flat and parallel to the lens as possible.

Ensure the entire receipt fits within the camera frame — cutting off the top or bottom may cause the merchant name or total to be missed.

Keep the camera steady. Tap the receipt in the live viewfinder to lock focus before capturing.

Receipt preparation

Flatten creased or folded receipts on a flat surface before scanning.

For very long receipts, fold them so the merchant header and total are visible in a single capture, then scan a second time for the middle section if needed.

If a receipt is faded, try photocopying it with increased contrast before scanning — a clearer image produces better OCR results.

E-receipts and digital receipts

For email receipts, take a screenshot of the email on your phone and attach it from the Photos library — or forward the email to yourself and save the PDF to Files.

When scanning a receipt displayed on another phone or screen, ensure maximum brightness on that device and minimise reflections.

After scanning

Always review the extracted Merchant and Amount before saving.

Use the full-screen attachment zoom to verify that the image is sharp and all text is readable.
