Taxes, tips, and fees
MileLedger supports granular expense breakdown fields — subtotal, tax, tip, discount, and fees — so your records match the actual receipt and the grand total is calculated accurately.
Available breakdown fields
Subtotal — the pre-tax, pre-tip amount.
Tax — sales tax or VAT charged on the purchase.
Tip — gratuity added at the point of sale.
Discount — any coupon, promotional, or loyalty discount applied.
Fees — service charges, delivery fees, or other additions.
How the grand total is calculated
Grand total = Amount + Tax + Tip + Fees − Discount.
The Amount field is always the authoritative figure you enter at the top of the editor. Breakdown fields are supplementary and used to reconcile the receipt.
If you enter breakdown fields, verify that their sum matches your entered Amount to keep records consistent.
Tax reporting guidance
Recording tax separately can help you identify the pre-tax expense amount for deduction purposes.
MileLedger does not calculate tax deductions or VAT reclaims. Consult a qualified tax professional for guidance on what is deductible in your jurisdiction.
Important notes
- Tax disclaimer: MileLedger records the values you enter but does not provide tax advice. The deductibility of any expense or tax amount depends on your local tax laws and business circumstances. Always consult a qualified tax professional.
