How expense totals are calculated
MileLedger calculates the grand total as: Amount + Tax + Tip + Fees − Discount. Each component is optional; only the Amount field is required.
Grand total formula
Grand total = Amount + Tax + Tip + Fees − Discount.
Amount is the primary field and is always required.
Tax, Tip, Fees, and Discount are optional breakdown fields. Leave them blank if they do not apply.
Example
Dinner: Amount = $45.00, Tax = $3.60, Tip = $9.00, Discount = $5.00, Fees = $0.
Grand total = $45.00 + $3.60 + $9.00 + $0 − $5.00 = $52.60.
Foreign currency expenses
If you log an expense in a foreign currency, enter the Amount in the foreign currency and provide the exchange rate. MileLedger converts and stores both the original amount and the home-currency equivalent.
Reports show the home-currency total; the foreign amount and rate are preserved in the expense detail.
Totals in reports and history
The Expenses tab shows a running total for your filtered view.
Reports aggregate grand totals across all expenses in the selected period and category.
Important notes
- If the sum of your breakdown fields (Tax + Tip + Fees − Discount) does not match the difference between your receipt subtotal and the total you paid, review your entries for accuracy before relying on the data for tax or reimbursement purposes.
