Business vs. personal expenses
Every expense in MileLedger can be marked as Business or Personal. This categorization flows through to reports, exports, and reimbursement tracking.
Why the categorization matters
Business expenses are typically deductible or reimbursable and should be separated from personal spending for accurate record-keeping.
Reports and CSV exports can be filtered by business or personal so you can share only the relevant subset with your accountant or employer.
Setting the categorization
When adding or editing an expense, locate the "Purpose" field and toggle between Business and Personal.
The selection defaults to your most recently used categorization for convenience.
Reimbursable expenses
Within Business expenses, you can also mark an expense as "Reimbursable" to flag it for employer reimbursement tracking.
MileLedger tracks whether a reimbursable expense has been submitted or settled, helping you avoid double-counting.
Policy hints
MileLedger may display a soft policy hint (for example, if you log a business Meals expense without attaching a receipt). These hints are informational and non-blocking — you can always save the expense as-is.
Important notes
- MileLedger does not provide tax advice. Consult a qualified tax professional to confirm which expenses are deductible under your jurisdiction's rules.
