Get started with MileLedger on phone

Follow these steps to install MileLedger, complete the onboarding flow, add your first vehicle, and record your first drive — all from your phone.

Prerequisites

  • A phone running a compatible version of iOS.
  • The MileLedger app installed from the App Store.
  • Optional: a Google account if you want to sync data and log expenses.

Steps

  1. 1

    Download and open MileLedger

Search for MileLedger on the App Store, tap Get, and wait for the installation to complete. Open the app once installed.

  2. 2

    Complete the onboarding flow

When you first open MileLedger, a short onboarding sequence introduces the main features. Read through each screen and follow any prompts. You can skip sign-in during onboarding — you do not need a Google account to start tracking drives.

  3. 3

    Add your first vehicle

Tap More in the tab bar, then tap Vehicles. Tap the add button to create a new vehicle. Enter a nickname (e.g. 'My Tesla'), the make, model, year, licence plate, and starting odometer reading. Tap Save. If you have only one vehicle, MileLedger sets it as the default automatically.

  4. 4

    Record your first drive

Tap Drives in the tab bar, then tap the add button to record a drive manually. Enter the date, distance, start and end locations, and select a vehicle. Choose whether the drive was Business or Personal. Add an optional note, then tap Save.

  5. 5

    Explore the Home tab

Tap Home to see your dashboard. The Home tab shows a summary of recent activity, distance totals, and quick-access actions. This is your at-a-glance view of mileage and expenses over the current period.

  6. 6

Set up automatic mileage tracking (optional)

MileLedger can detect drives automatically using your phone's motion and location sensors. To enable this, go to More → Preferences and turn on automatic tracking. You will be prompted to grant location access — choose Always Allow for automatic tracking to work reliably in the background.

  7. 7

Sign in with Google (optional, required for expenses)

To sync your data to the cloud and unlock expense logging, tap More → Sign In → Continue with Google. Select your Google account and complete the sign-in flow. Once signed in, your data syncs automatically whenever you are online.

  8. 8

Log your first expense (requires sign-in)

Tap Expenses in the tab bar, then tap the add button. Enter the amount, merchant name, category, and date. Optionally attach a photo of your receipt and link the expense to a drive. Tap Save.

Expected results

  • MileLedger is installed and you have completed the onboarding flow.
  • At least one vehicle is saved and set as the default.
  • Your first drive appears in the Drives tab.
  • If you signed in with Google, a sync indicator confirms your data is being backed up.

Important notes

  • You can track unlimited drives without a Google account. Sign-in is only required for expense logging, cloud sync, and web access.
  • Automatic mileage tracking requires location access set to 'Always Allow'. If you choose 'While Using', background detection will not work.
  • Free accounts can log up to 10 expenses. Upgrade to Premium for unlimited expenses.

Common problems

I can't find the Vehicles section.

Tap the More tab (last icon in the tab bar), then look for Vehicles in the list. If you don't see it, make sure you're on the latest version of MileLedger.

The Expenses tab asks me to sign in.

Expense logging requires a Google account. Tap More → Sign In → Continue with Google to sign in, then return to the Expenses tab.
