Expense not saving

If an expense fails to save in MileLedger, the most likely causes are not being signed in with a Google account, reaching the 10-expense limit on the Free plan, or a required field being empty. This guide covers each cause and the steps to resolve it.

Steps

  1. 1

Confirm you are signed in with a Google account

Tap More → Account. If you see a 'Sign In' button rather than your account details, you are not signed in. Tap Sign In → Continue with Google and complete sign-in before attempting to save an expense.

  2. 2

Check the Free plan expense limit

Go to the Expenses tab and count the total number of saved expenses. If you have 10 or more, you have reached the Free plan limit. Either upgrade to Premium (More → Subscription) or delete an existing expense to free up space.

  3. 3

Verify all required fields are filled in

Open the expense form and confirm that Amount and Date are both filled in. The Merchant field is recommended but may not be required in all versions. Ensure the amount is a valid number greater than zero.

  4. 4

Try saving again after a moment

If you suspect a transient network issue, wait a few seconds and tap Save again. MileLedger is designed to save expenses locally first, so a network blip should not permanently block saving.

  5. 5

    Force-close and reopen MileLedger

If the Save button appears active but nothing happens, force-close MileLedger from the app switcher and reopen it. Re-enter the expense and try saving again.

Common reasons an expense does not save

Not signed in: expense logging requires a Google Sign-In account. If you are not signed in, MileLedger will prompt you to sign in when you attempt to save an expense.

Free plan expense limit reached: the Free plan allows up to 10 expenses. When you have reached this limit, new expenses cannot be saved. Upgrade to Premium for unlimited expenses, or delete one or more existing expenses to make space.

Required field missing: MileLedger requires at least an amount and a date for each expense. If either field is blank, the Save button may be inactive or the expense may fail validation.

Network connectivity issue: expense data syncs to Firebase. In rare cases, a save failure can occur if the network is unavailable at the moment of saving, though the app is designed to save locally first and sync when connectivity returns.

Expected results

  • The expense appears in the Expenses tab after a successful save.
  • The expense syncs to the web app at /app within a minute of being saved while the app is in the foreground.

Important notes

  • Expense logging requires a Google Sign-In account. You cannot log expenses without signing in.
  • The Free plan limit is 10 expenses. Reaching the limit does not delete existing expenses — it only blocks new ones from being saved until space is made or Premium is activated.

Common problems

The Save button is greyed out.

Check that Amount and Date fields are filled in. The Save button becomes active only when required fields contain valid data.

I saved an expense but it does not appear in the list.

Check that the Expenses tab is not filtered by a date range or category that excludes the new expense. Also confirm the expense's date matches the filter period shown. Clear all filters to see all expenses.
