Changes are not appearing on another device or the web
MileLedger syncs trips and expenses to Firebase while the phone app is in the foreground and connected to the internet. If changes you made on the phone are not appearing on the web app, the app may not have had the opportunity to sync yet, or there is a sign-in or network issue.
Steps
- 1
Open MileLedger on the phone and keep it in the foreground
Open the MileLedger app on your phone and leave it on screen for 30–60 seconds while connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. This gives the app time to complete any pending sync operations.
- 2
Confirm the phone has an active internet connection
Check that the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or has mobile data enabled. Try loading a webpage in Safari to confirm connectivity.
- 3
Verify the web app is signed in with the same account
At /app, check the profile avatar or account display in the top-right corner. Confirm the email address matches the Google account used in the phone app. If not, sign out of the web app and sign back in with the correct account.
- 4
Refresh the web app
After the phone app has had time to sync, press Cmd+R (Mac) or F5 (Windows) to refresh the web app. Alternatively, close and reopen the browser tab. Your updated data should now appear.
- 5
Sign out and back in on the phone if sync is stuck
In rare cases, a stale authentication token can prevent sync. On the phone, tap More → Account → Sign Out, then sign back in. After re-signing in, open the app, keep it in the foreground for a minute, and then refresh the web app.
How MileLedger sync works
Drives and expenses sync to Firebase in real time while the MileLedger phone app is open in the foreground and connected to the internet. Other collections (such as vehicle settings and preferences) are synced in batches.
The web app at /app shows the state of the most recent successful sync. If the phone app is closed or offline, the web app will continue to show the last synced state — it does not refresh from the device directly.
Common causes of sync not appearing
App was not in the foreground when changes were made: records saved while the app is in the background may sync the next time the app is brought to the foreground with an internet connection.
No internet connection when changes were saved: all data is saved locally first. Sync occurs when connectivity becomes available and the app is in the foreground.
Different Google account on web: the web app displays data for the account currently signed in. If you are signed in with a different Google account on the web, you will see that account's data.
Web page not refreshed: the web app does not poll for updates in real time. Manually refresh the browser page after giving the sync time to complete.
Important notes
- Trips and expenses sync while the app is in the foreground. Vehicle settings and other collections sync in batches and may take longer to appear.
- Receipt images do not sync to the cloud or the web app. They are stored locally on the phone only.
- If you have never signed in with Google on the phone app, no cloud sync exists and the web app will show an empty workspace.
Common problems
I added a drive but it is not on the web app even after refreshing.
Open the MileLedger phone app, confirm it is signed in with the same Google account as the web app, and leave the app open in the foreground for about a minute while connected to the internet. Refresh the web app again.
The web app shows data from months ago but not recent entries.
The most recent sync may not have completed. Ensure the phone app is running in the foreground with a good internet connection. Check that the session has not expired by verifying More → Account shows your account details rather than a Sign In button.
