Drive distance is incorrect

MileLedger calculates drive distance from GPS coordinate samples filtered for accuracy. Poor signal conditions, interrupted sessions, or very short segments of a drive recorded separately can produce incorrect distance readings. This guide explains why distances can be off and how to correct them.

Steps

  1. 1

Open the drive and check for quality flags

Tap the drive in the Drives tab to view its details. Look for flags such as 'Needs Review', 'Low GPS Accuracy', 'Interrupted Session', or 'Possible Duplicate'. These flags explain why the recorded distance may differ from the actual route.

  2. 2

    Edit the distance manually

Tap Edit on the drive detail screen. Update the distance field to the correct mileage. You can use a maps application (Maps, Google Maps) to check the actual route distance if you are unsure of the correct figure. Tap Save to apply the correction.

  3. 3

Check for a second partial trip

If you stopped mid-drive for more than approximately 15 minutes, MileLedger may have split your journey into two trips. Check the Drives tab for a second entry around the same time and merge the distances by editing the first trip to reflect the total mileage, then deleting the second entry.

  4. 4

    Review and delete duplicates

If a 'Possible Duplicate' flag appears, compare the two trip entries. Keep the one with the more accurate distance and delete the other by swiping left on it in the Drives list.

Why distances can be incorrect

Low GPS accuracy: in tunnels, dense urban canyons, underground car parks, or areas with obstructed sky view, GPS accuracy degrades. MileLedger filters out low-accuracy samples, which can result in a shorter distance than the actual drive if many samples are discarded.

Interrupted session: if the app was backgrounded aggressively by iOS or the phone lost signal mid-drive, the recorded GPS trace may be incomplete. The drive may appear with an 'Interrupted Session' or 'Needs Review' flag.

Trip fragmentation: if MileLedger finalizes the trip before you have finished driving — for example, because you stopped for longer than approximately 15 minutes at a location — the remainder of your drive may be recorded as a separate trip.

Duplicate trip entries: a 'Possible Duplicate' flag indicates the app may have detected the same journey twice. Review and delete the duplicate.

Expected results

  • The corrected distance appears in the drive detail and is reflected immediately in report totals.

Important notes

  • MileLedger does not invent or inflate mileage — GPS samples are filtered to remove inaccurate readings, which can cause distances to be understated in poor signal conditions.
  • Edited distances are saved locally and sync to the cloud along with all other drive data.

Common problems

A drive shows 0 miles.

This usually means all GPS samples were filtered out due to very low accuracy, or the recording was immediately interrupted. Edit the drive to enter the correct distance manually, or delete it and re-add it manually.

My total mileage is higher than expected.

Check for duplicate trip entries in the Drives tab. Filter by date to find any drives you may not recognise and delete the duplicates.
