Export problems — CSV or PDF not downloading

If a CSV or PDF export is failing or producing an empty file, the cause is usually a browser download block (web app), an iOS share sheet dismissal (phone app), or a filter that produces no matching records. PDF export requires a Premium subscription.

Steps

  1. 1

    Clear filters before exporting

In the Reports tab (or Drives/Expenses tab), clear all active filters. Set the date range to cover the full period you want. Confirm there is at least one record in the current view before exporting.

  2. 2

Allow downloads in your browser (web app)

In Chrome: click the three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional permissions → Automatic downloads → allow mileledger.app. In Safari: go to Safari → Settings → Websites → Downloads → allow mileledger.app.

  3. 3

Disable browser extensions temporarily (web app)

Open an incognito or private browsing window (which disables most extensions) and try the export from there. If it succeeds, a browser extension is the culprit — identify and disable the blocking extension.

  4. 4

Use the share sheet correctly on phone

Tap the Export or Share button in the Reports tab. Wait for the iOS share sheet to open. Tap 'Save to Files' and choose a folder, or tap an app (Mail, AirDrop) to send the file. Do not dismiss the share sheet by tapping outside it before making a selection.

  5. 5

Verify Premium subscription for PDF export

Tap More → Subscription to confirm your Premium status. If it shows as Free, upgrade or restore your existing subscription. PDF export is not available on the Free plan.

CSV export — web app

Browser download blocked: modern browsers block automatic file downloads from sites that have not been explicitly permitted. If no download starts after clicking Export, check your browser's download settings for mileledger.app and allow downloads. A blocked download prompt usually appears in the address bar.

Pop-up blocker interference: some browser extensions or pop-up blockers can intercept file downloads. Temporarily disable browser extensions and try the export again.

Empty export file: if the downloaded CSV opens as empty or contains only a header row, the selected date range or filters may not match any records. Clear filters and widen the date range, then export again.

CSV export — phone app

Share sheet dismissed too quickly: the phone export uses the iOS share sheet to save or send the CSV file. If you dismiss the share sheet before selecting a save location or app, the file is not saved. Tap Share, wait for the sheet to open fully, then choose Save to Files or your preferred destination.

No records to export: if the current filter matches no records, the export file will be empty or the export button may be inactive.

PDF export

PDF export is a Premium feature. If you are on the Free plan, the PDF export option may be greyed out or prompt you to upgrade. Upgrade to Premium in More → Subscription to unlock PDF exports.

If you are on Premium and the PDF fails to generate, force-close MileLedger, reopen it, and try the export again. Ensure the selected date range contains at least one drive or expense.

Important notes

  • PDF export requires a Premium subscription. CSV export is available on both Free and Premium plans.
  • Export files are generated from the currently selected date range and filters. If the export is empty, the filter is too narrow.

Common problems

The export button is greyed out.

The export button is inactive when there are no records in the current view. Widen the date range or clear filters to ensure at least one drive or expense is visible, then try again.

The CSV file opens but all dates show incorrectly in Excel.

This is a date format compatibility issue between the CSV and Excel's locale settings. In Excel, select the date column, right-click → Format Cells → Date, and choose the format that matches the CSV (typically YYYY-MM-DD). Alternatively, open the CSV in Google Sheets, which handles date formats more reliably.
