Saved Places vs Smart Routes

Saved Places are about a single location (home, office, client). Smart Routes are about a route you repeat. They work together with Work Hours to reduce uncategorized drives.

Saved Places — a location

A Saved Place is one pin on the map (plus a radius, about **120 m / ~400 ft** by default).

When a drive **starts or ends** near that place, MileLedger can suggest the category or purpose you assigned (for example, Office → Business).

Use Saved Places for stops you care about: home, office, warehouse, regular client sites.

Manage them in **More → Saved Places**.

Smart Routes — a path

A Smart Route matches a **route**: from A to B, or from any start to a destination.

When a new trip matches that path (about **400 m / ~0.25 mi** around each endpoint), MileLedger can categorize it. Specific-location rules also match the reverse direction (A↔B).

Use Smart Routes for commuting or any trip you take the same way often.

Manage them in **More → Smart Routes**. You can add one from a completed drive, edit it, turn auto-apply on or off, or delete it.

Quick comparison

**Saved Places** match *where* (one spot). **Smart Routes** match *the path* (A→B).

Example: “Office” as a Saved Place can suggest Business whenever you arrive or leave near the office. A Smart Route “Home ↔ Office” only fires when that full commute matches.

If both could apply, **Smart Route wins**, then Saved Place, then Work Hours for leftovers.

When to use which

Start with **Saved Places** for home and office if you want place-based suggestions.

Add **Smart Routes** for your main commute or regular client routes so those trips categorize reliably without opening the app every time.

Turn on **Work Hours** so drives that do not match a place or route still get a sensible Business/Personal suggestion to confirm.

Important notes

  • You can always override any suggestion on the drive detail or Home “Needs you” inbox.
  • Smart Routes with auto-apply can categorize without a prompt once they are trusted; Work Hours suggestions still ask for confirmation.
